Due to the exceptional circumstances brought on during the 2022 hurricane season, Medicare established a special enrollment opportunity for qualifying Floridians.
The Hurricane Ian Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is expiring on May 31, but there is also an SEP related to Tropical Storm Nicole that goes until July 31.
The Hurricane Ian Disaster SEP (effective Sept. 23, 2022) allows Florida residents in all counties to make a Medicare election if they have not made any elections since the hurricane. You have until May 31, 2023 to do so.
The Tropical Storm Nicole disaster SEP (effective Nov. 11, 22) is now available in ALL Florida counties and has been extended until July 31, 2023.
All elections made duringone of these SEPs go into effect the following month and remain in effect for the rest of 2023. You will have a chance to enroll in a different Medicare plan for 2024, if you so choose, during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period that runs October 15 through December 7, 2023.
